Defining LEED

January 05, 2009

With the ever-increasing buzz about environmental-friendly living within the last few years, you have most likely heard countless numbers of new ways to make your lifestyle more eco-friendly. One phrase that you may have heard come up is LEED certified. Whether referring to corporate structures or private homes, LEED is popping up just about everywhere.

So, what exactly does LEED mean?

Well, for starters, it is perhaps one of the most innovative and attention-grabbing additions to the green living movement thus far. LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental design. Starting in 1998, it has quickly become one of the most sought after ways to improve the way buildings effect the environment. LEED certifications provide a series of requirements that must be met to ensure that a building is environmentally conscious. With the certification met, LEED certified buildings are energy efficient and provide lower operating costs, conservation of energy and water, as well as a reduction of waste sent to landfills and greenhouse emission gases, not to mention improved health and safety for workers.

LEED certified buildings truly are the wave of the future, whether the building is newly constructed or has been in existence for decades. The time spent to obtain an eco-friendly LEED certified environment will elicit countless benefits for years to come and is well worth the time and cost.
